Study Visa

Study in Australia

     Australia has a reputation for having some of the world’s leading Education Institutions. Join the thousands of satisfied international students studying in Australia. You will experience a unique kind of education – a learning style that encourages innovative, creative, independent thinking.

To apply for the Student Visa you must meet the following:

  • Select a registered course by an Australian Education Institution (e.g. University);
  •   The course study must be full time  

To be granted a Student Visa you will be assessed against two main factors:

  • Your Passport Nationality;
  • Type of Student Visa you wish to apply for.

     A Student Visa is a Temporary Visa that is valid for the duration of your course. When you have completed your studies, you will be required to leave Australia by the date indicated on your Visa. Please note you may be entitled to apply for another Temporary Visa, or even Permanent Residence, before your visa expires.

What does this Visa let me do?

With this Visa:

  • You can study in Australia
  • Eligible dependent family members can accompany you to Australia
  • When you have commenced your course of study in Australia, you can work up to 20 hours per week, while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
  • Your family members can work up to 20 hours per week, provided you have commenced your course of study in Australia.
    Note: if your spouse wants to study for more than three months they must apply for their own student visa. The application can be made in Australia.

   
Length of Stay

     This Visa allows you to stay in Australia for the duration of your course. It permits multiple entries to Australia. Dependent, family members who come with you to Australia are usually able to stay the same length of time as you, but they cannot stay once you have left the country.

Working While Studying

If you have been granted a Student Visa on, or after, 26 April 2008, you and your dependent family members will already have Permission to Work, automatically included with your Visa. Further information on conditions that may apply to you working while studying is available.

     If you were granted a Student Visa before 26 April 2008 and have not yet applied for Permission to Work, you and your dependent family members may only apply for Permission to Work after you have started your course in Australia.

You can work a maximum of 20 hours per week when your course is in session and unlimited hours when your course is not.

In Session.                                                      

     You cannot undertake work until you have started your course in Australia.

Note: Work that is a formal registered part of your course is not included in the limit of 20 hours per week.                                                                                                     
     If you are doing voluntary or unpaid work, you must apply for permission to work. It is included in the limit of 20 hours per week. A week begins on Monday and ends on the following Sunday.

Student Guardian Visa

Who is this Visa for?

     The Student Guardian Visa is for foreign nationals applying to stay in Australia as the guardian of a student who is studying in Australia.

If you are granted this Visa, you can:

  • You can study in Australia
  • Live in Australia for the same length of time as the student for whom you are guardian, or until the student turns 18 years of age
  • Bring dependent children with you to Australia, but only if they are under six years age and meet specific eligibility requirements
  • Study in Australia for up to three months

Note: if you intend to

Study for more than 3 months, you must apply for a Student Visa.   
                                                         

Nominating a Student Guardian

     The student’s parent or legal custodian must nominate you as the student’s guardian. If you are the student’s parent or legal custodian, you can nominate yourself as the student’s guardian.
